Effective Rhinoplasty Recovery
Recovery is crucial after any surgery, and it pays to exercise restraint and caution in the days and weeks following the procedure. In the case of a rhinoplasty, there are numerous activities and elements to avoid as your nose takes shape. A little bit of change here and there will help ensure the results of your surgery and keep the recovery period comfortable.
Post-Surgery Expectations
In general, you’ll want to avoid any activity or habit that will potentially strain your facial muscles or outright damage your healing nose. Even casual movements such as bending can impede your progress, which is important to keep in mind when lying down at night. Make sure to avoid resting on flat surfaces; if you don’t have a reclining bed, keep your head elevated with extra pillows.
Slowing Down
Any rigorous physical activity, whether it’s casual sports or, exercising such as swimming, or even yoga, should be avoided during the first month after your rhinoplasty. (Swimming should be avoided for six weeks.) Even slight stress can compromise recovery time. This also includes blowing your nose; it’s actually better to avoid this in order to prevent sneezing. Do not use facial tissue altogether and instead dab with sterile gauze to address a runny nose.
Protecting Skin
For the first three months after surgery, it’s recommended that you avoid direct sunlight. The skin on your nose will remain sensitive to high temperatures during this time. If exposure is unavoidable, try your best to cover your face. Apply a sunscreen with an SPF over 30 if you plan on being out for a while, but avoid wearing sunglasses, as they can irritate tender tissue. You will also need to keep your splint dry during the healing process.
General Health
Smoking should be avoided for recovery after any surgical procedure, and we recommend abstaining for 2-3 days after your procedure. Focus on taking your prescribed medications and relaxing with your head propped up so that drainage is as effective as possible during the recovery period. While you relax, treat yourself to food and drink that won’t upset your allergies or require excessive chewing.
